Happy MOvember!
The time has come for men from around the globe to raise awareness by prompting private and public coversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. What better way than to participate in Movember. Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer.
However, the Movember movement has often received criticism about simply being a moustache growing contest. We must convince these naysayers that we men, who are proudly donating our upper lips to essentially become walking, talking billboards for the myriad of health issues that come along with just being a man! Therefore, I suggest going one step further! Make this month really about men’s health, about your health and fitness. In addition to growing a moustache (and going for a prostate examination if you are a man of age), why not become a healthier, fitter man?
Therefore, I issue any man participating in Movember, including myself, this challenge: Set a health and/or fitness goal for this month, whether it be losing fat, gaining muscle, running farther/faster, lifting more, eating healthier, sleeping more. And while you are growing your moustache, work on your goal too. Then if you reach your goal before the month is up, step up and set another one!
I will be posting my progress as well as more entries on health and fitness throughout the month. I hope together, we can really make this month about men’s health.
In closing, I leave you with the immortal words of comedian Peter Russell.
“BE A MAN.”
